Defense

Damage mitigation, blocking efficiency, and physical resilience

Defense determines your physical resilience - how much damage you mitigate, how efficiently you block, and how resistant you are to being staggered or interrupted. Unlike other combat skills, Defense XP is earned through active defensive play: blocking damage and executing perfect parries. Higher Defense means less damage taken from all sources, more sustainable blocking with shields, and better resistance to stagger effects. Defense level also determines what armor you can equip - better armor requires higher Defense. The Overwhelming Force system means that Defense level matters for more than just damage reduction. Against much stronger opponents, your parries and blocks can fail entirely if your Defense is too low.

Combat Scaling

Damage Reduction

Percentage damage reduction applied after armor calculation

Formula: level * 0.001

At Level 100: 10%

Block Stamina Efficiency

Blocking costs less stamina at higher levels

Formula: 1 - (level * 0.0065)

At Level 100: 65% reduction

Stagger Resistance

Harder to interrupt or knock back

Formula: 1 + (level * 0.005)

At Level 100: 50% more resistant

Equipment Gating

Defense level gates: Armor

Armor equipment defines its own defense_requirement field. This schema establishes that Defense level is the gating stat for armor. Example item definition: id: steel_plate_body defense_requirement: 26 # ... other stats The server validates: player.defense_level >= item.defense_requirement

Overwhelming Force

Defense level directly contributes to your ability to defend against powerful attacks. A low Defense level means you'll struggle to parry or block attacks from high-level enemies, even with good armor. Power Difference Thresholds: - 0-15: Normal defense - 16-30: Parry window reduced 25%, block -10% - 31-45: Parry window reduced 50%, block -25% - 46-60: Parry auto-fails, block -50% - 61+: All defense fails, guard broken Leveling Defense makes you more capable of defending against stronger opponents, not just taking less damage.

Tips

  • Defense XP comes from actually defending - hold that block!
  • Perfect parries grant much more XP than blocking
  • XP scales with damage prevented - fight tough enemies
  • Low Defense against strong enemies = parries will fail
  • Block stamina efficiency is huge at high levels
  • Stagger resistance helps you finish combos without interruption
  • Armor requirement is per-item, check before you buy

A subtle metallic sheen covers your armor, occasionally flickering with absorbed impact effects. When you successfully block or parry, brief sparks fly from the point of impact. Taking damage causes a visible ripple effect across your armor, demonstrating your resilience.

Lore
The art of defense is often overlooked by glory-seeking warriors who focus only on dealing damage. But the wisest fighters know that the greatest victories come from those who can endure - who can weather the storm and still stand when their enemies have exhausted themselves. The ancient shield-masters taught that defense is not passive. It is an active discipline requiring constant attention, precise timing, and unwavering focus. A perfect parry is not luck - it is the result of thousands of hours of practice, reading an opponent's movements and responding with split-second precision. Those who master defense become the anchors of any group - the immovable objects that allow their allies to fight without fear. They learn to read the flow of battle, to anticipate attacks before they come, and to turn an enemy's strength against them. The highest practitioners of defense are said to achieve a state of "iron mind" - a calm certainty that no blow can fell them. Their armor becomes an extension of their will, and their shields an impenetrable wall against any assault.
